Water in all its forms, icebergs, snowflakes, oceans, lakes and rivers has a fascination of its own. But none can surpass the awesome beauty of a waterfall.
There are about sixteen principal waterfalls in Sri Lanka. Of these Bambarakanda waterfall is the highest, with a height of about 240 metros. Dunhinda, which is perhaps the best known of all the waterfalls, gets its name from the smoke spray it creates as its water falls into the rock pool below. Hence the names Dunhinda, Dunhinda, Ravana Ella, Diyaluma all have strange legends, which explain how they got their names.
According to legend this is how Diyaluma, which literally means skein of water, got its name. A prince flees from his enemies. He is accompanied by his princess. As they run they come to a huge rock. The prince climbs up the rock with difficulty and throws down a vine for his princess to climb up. The princess catches hold of the vine and the prince begins to haul her up. But half way up the rock the vine gets entangled in a rock crevice and hangs between the top of the rock and the ground below. The princess dies. The deity of the forest sees this and makes the girl immortal by turning her into a slim skein of water. That is how Diyaluma got its name.
Bopath Ella is another watefall well known for its beauty of formation. In this, the water falls gracefully in the shape of a ‘bo’ leaf.
Waterfalls are not just pretty things. They have majesty of their own. They are delights of nature to be experienced and felt, not just seen only.

Once upon a time there lived a farmer. He noticed a parrot who come to his paddy field and fed on the paddy.
The parrot also took away some paddy The farmer asked the parrot ‘why are you doing this?
The parrot answered˝ My parents are old they are blind and weak. They cannot fly.
So I take some paddy for them.’’ The farmer said ‘It is a good.
I will keep a part of my field for you birds to feed on.’ Even today all farmers leave a plot of the field for the birds to feed.
It is called ‘kurulu paluwa’.
It is our duty to look after our parents, when they are old. We must also be kind to all animals and all living beings.

There are various kinds of wild animals in the forests.
Among them elephant, tiger, dear, wild buffalo are common.
Out of these some animals eat herbs and leaves while others
eat the flesh of small animals. These animals can be seen at
sanctuaries. These animals are so cruel. So that we must not
tease them. When we go to the zoo there also we can see them.
But not freely. They are kept in cages or in dens. They cannot harm us
. Unlike in cage these animals look beauty or natural when they are in forests.
They live a happy life in forest. We have to safeguard ourselves without laughing
or teasing them.

Flying kites is a very interesting hobby. I like to fly kites because it makes me happy and proud.
There are different kinds of kites such as snakes and pea- cocks. We can see a lot of kite designs at
Gale face Green. Colombo. There we can buy readymade kits too.
Making a kite is because the kite should be balanced properly. Other wise it will fly
a few feet high and fall back to the ground.
Once I made a kite with red and blue stripes. And I made It fly very high At last I coul
d see It as a little speck of dust in the air. But at once the thread broke! Oh! Never saw my kit again.

The top fo the rock is about 87 metres high. On one side is a valley about 73 metres deep.
The name of the village is made up of the name of the daluk trees which grow in large number here,

A large number of medicinal trees and fruit trees grod here.
Poisonous snakes crawl under the bushes,
